This is my performance of “Flag” at the Australian Poetry Slam 2025 Sydney Final, organised by Word Travels.
The APS Sydney Final 2025 took place on October 2025 at Customs House, Sydney, bringing together 16 city-wide finalists from across the greater metropolitan area to perform original spoken word poetry for a chance to advance in the competition.
“Flag” is a spoken word poem about history, power, colonisation, and memory. Through the image of a flag held up not by a flagpole, but by bones, the poem explores the violence and erasure that can sit beneath national symbols. It reflects on the lives, cultures, languages, and stories that were harmed or silenced in the making of a nation’s identity.
This piece asks what a flag represents when it stands above unmarked grief, and what it means for land, memory, and people to keep remembering what history has tried to bury.
Performing “Flag” at the APS Sydney Final was a powerful opportunity to share a poem that confronts silence, challenges symbols, and honours the weight of stories that deserve to be heard.
